Jerry Becker (1937-2022)

Remembering and Honoring a Great Colleague and Friend of ICTM
Jerry Becker served as a math education faculty member at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) from 1979 to 2022. During those years, Jerry taught doctoral and master’s degree students and countless undergraduate students in addition to international scholars and math teachers from across the state. Jerry served on the boards of numerous state, national, and international educational organizations. He presented lectures in Germany, Korea, Singapore, China, and Japan and authored a litany of articles published in internationally refereed journals  Always passionate about serving math educators in Illinois from high needs areas, for more than 20 years he taught a 4-week summer institute at the University of Chicago with a focus on continuing education for Chicago area public school teachers.  He also organized an annual ICTM teaching conference in Southern Illinois each February to help give access to quality professional learning opportunities for K-12 teachers in the southern sections of Illinois. Sadly, Jerry passed away shortly after the 37th annual conference in 2022.  His legacy and passion for teaching live on through the students and teachers whose lives he touched. His impact on mathematics education is, ironically, incalculable. To read more about Jerry's contributions in Illinois, our nation, and across the globe, click here

Equitable Access Conference Scholarship Fund Details
To continue Jerry's dedication to providing professional learning opportunities for teachers in high needs areas, this scholarship fund is used to pay for registration to the ICTM Annual Conference as well as help to offset travel costs and provide a free ICTM membership.  Each year, teachers from across from the state in qualifying districts are invited to apply for one of the available scholarships.  Invitations to apply are sent out through our regular ICTM emails as well as posted on the website.    The number of scholarships available each year depends on the funds available in the scholarship account. Our scholarship committee reviews the applications and either selects recipients based on need or randomly from fully completed applications.
